Summary

The goal of erecting a phylogenetically-valid taxonomy is crucial for understanding the evolution and ecological significance of Foraminifera, as well as enhancing their practical utility in the applied sciences. Approaches on how to combine the vast amount of genetic, ultrastructural, and fossil data available in order to develop a consensus tree will be explored, and protocols for updating the "foraminiferal tree" in the multinational "Tree of Life" effort will be presented.
