M2 Cult FADE Meeting: Culturing of Foraminifera to Avoid Duplication of Effort
bottom
top

Summary

The goal of this half day meeting is to update all those actively culturing foraminifera as to the ongoing projects involving culturing of foraminifera in an effort to avoid duplication of effort and enhance inter-laboratory comparisons. It is clear that many laboratories worldwide are conducting similar culture experiments: in particular with respect to the large number projects on ocean acidification and foraminiferal calcification that have recently been funded. Given the significant time (many months) involved with many benthic culture experiments and that increasingly more PhD theses or postdoctoral fellowships rely on such experiments, it is wise for the global foraminiferal community to meld efforts. Participants will be asked to present a 5-minute overview of their laboratory's current and imminent culturing projects. Participation by resarchers involved with both benthic and planktic species are welcomed. After all presentations have been made, issues that are of general interest (e.g. growth, reproduction, inter-species differences, physico-chemical stability of the culturing media) will be identified and discussed. In addition, parties with overlapping projects will be urged to discuss details in smaller groups so that each has the opportunity to adjust their plans and/or join efforts to enhance future results while minimizing negative impacts on early-career researchers. If time allows, a final half hour will be devoted to updating the entire group. Parties who are interested in learning methods to culture foraminifera are urged instead to attend the workshop on culturing techniques convened by Heinz, Geslin and Bernhard.
